10/13/2009 FSU Sustainable Energy Research Facility Receives $856,000 Federal Grant

Frostburg State University’s Renewable Energy Center has been awarded an $856,350 appropriation from the U.S. Department of Energy to fund the final steps in the establishment of its Sustainable Energy Research Facility (SERF), a green, self-sufficient, off-the-grid building designed for educational research on renewable energy in the Appalachian region.
Obtained with the assistance of Maryland Congressman Roscoe Bartlett (R-6th), who also helped secure the initial funding for the construction of the building, this money will make it possible to purchase research equipment and computer hardware and software, as well as to employ researchers and student assistants.

12/05/08 FSU Receives ‘Champion Award’ for Developing WISE Demo System and WISE Certified Education Program

The Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia section of the Solar Energy Industries Association (MDV-SEIA), a leading national trade association for the solar energy industry, presented Frostburg State University with a “Champion Award” on Dec. 5 at the Solar Focus 2009 Conference in Annapolis, Md. Oguz Soysal and Hilkat Soysal, faculty members of the FSU Department of Physics and Engineering who direct FSU’s renewable energy projects, accepted the award, which recognizes FSU’s success in establishing a renewable energy demonstration and training program and its Wind and Solar Energy Residential Demonstration System, WISE.

09/19/08 FSU Will Offer Wind and Solar Energy Education Program


Frostburg State University will offer an education program on design, installation and maintenance of residential wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) electric generation systems. The program includes an online component from Oct. 13 to Dec. 5, as well as a hands-on component from Dec. 12 to Dec. 14 to prepare the attendees for the certification test administered by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners Inc. The hands-on part of the program will be held in FSU’s Compton Science Center.

09/09/08 Grant Kicks Off FSU’s Project of Building Sustainable Energy Research Facility
Thanks to U.S. Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett of Maryland, Frostburg State University’s Department of Physics and Engineering is now moving forward on building a Sustainable Energy Research Facility (SERF) with a grant of $738,000 from the Department of Energy. The total project amount of $1,476,000 includes 50 percent federal and 50 percent non-federal funding. The grant is managed by the US Department of Energy, National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) located at Morgantown, WV The project, co-directed by Dr. Oguz Soysal and Hilkat Soysal of FSU’s Department of Physics and Engineering, will be completed in two years.

Approval Latest High-Profile Achievement of University’s WISE Project

Area electricians, contractors, engineers and other interested parties will have an opportunity to expand their knowledge of photovoltaic (PV) generation systems, thanks to Frostburg State University’s latest inroads in providing educational programs on renewable energy: FSU recently received approval from the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) to offer workshops and entry-level certification exams on designing, installing and maintaining residential PV generation systems.
