Design, Instalation, and Maintenance of Residential PV and Wind Generation Systems

Frostburg State University is offering an education program on design, installation, and maintenance of residential electric generation systems using photovoltaic (PV) solar modules and/or small wind turbines.

8-week online course prepares the participants for entry level certificate exam administered by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP). In addition, participants learn the fundamentals of wind powered small generation systems as described in the NABCEP Small Wind Installer Task Analysisi for systems under 100kW in size

During every week of the workshop, instructional materials will be posted on the course web site. The participants will have the flexibility to review the course materials and check their understanding at their own pace and schedule. In the end of the workshop, the course content will be reviewed and a cumulative assessment test will be given. Participants who complete the coursework and obtained a passing score in the online assessment test will receive a certificate of completion from the FSU Renewable Energy Center.

Participants will learn:

  • The basics of PV and wind generation systems, resource assessment, components of small PV and wind generation systems, setup configuration, sizing, wiring and controls,
  • Relevant sections of the National Electric Code (NEC), zoning regulations, building codes pertaining to P and /wind systems, interconnection requirements, available incentives
  • Practical experiments and demonstrations of different aspects of PV and /wind generation systems including a site visit to FSU WISE system and actual hands on set up of a small grid connected system

Prerequisite: High school diploma
